Micro-Industries

We define a micro-industry here at FMS as any business enterprise that can be easily learned by almost anyone, simple to put in to practice, and quickly profitable, even at a small scale, by using the resources available to us.

Our micro-industry program currently consists of three different ventures: 1mile walking sticks, Wake Up coffee and FMS canned jellies and pickles. Our micro-industry program serves Feed My Sheep’s mission of feeding those who are hungry physically, spiritually and emotionally in two primary ways. First, these business ventures provide people in our community with productive and enjoyable activities in which to participate within a safe and peaceful environment, while building friendships and positive influences. Second, they are taught useful skills and responsibilities which they can use to make money, not only by selling these items through FMS, but also can be used at other jobs in the future.

1mile walking sticks currently consist of only one type, (diamond willow,) and are hand-carved, polished and sealed to show the incredible pattern of the wood. Each walking stick takes approximately 8-10 hours of work to complete.

Wake Up coffee is roasted, ground and packaged fresh here at FMS. If you want to grind your own, we also sell whole bean. Each batch is sourced from one individual farm at a time in various coffee-growing regions of the world. This single-origin approach gives our coffee a much more nuanced and unique flavor, making other coffee seem bland in comparison!

FMS canned jellies and pickles are made using recipes and techniques taught by Ellen, one of our micro-industry coordinators. Ellen previously had her own, successful canned jelly business, but now chooses to use her knowledge and expertise to benefit the people of our community through our micro-industry program.

All of our items are sold at our café front desk at 116 Ave G in Temple, 7 days a week, from 9am to 1pm, and at local farmer’s markets in Belton and Temple. Due to current demand, 1mile walking sticks may not be available in person, but can always be reserved by emailing Casey at casey@feedmysheeptemple.org. In addition, all of our canned items are also sold at Gooch Family Farm, 4117 Deer Creek Rd in Troy, Thu-Fri 10am to 3pm, and Sat 10am-4pm.

If you’d like to learn more about any of our micro-industries, schedule a visit, or find out how you can get involved with this program, please email Casey at casey@feedmysheeptemple.org.
